Information for Current Grantees - Accident and Sickness Insurance

The United States Department of State provides Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE) coverage for all Fulbright grantees at no cost to you.

Full information can be found at: Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges

This plan should not be construed as an insurance policy. The ASPE is a self-funded health benefits plan designed to pay covered medical expenses for eligible Exchange Participants. Covered medical expenses are subject to limitations as defined in the health benefits plan program guide book posted above.

It is important to note that pre-existing conditions are not covered.

Your coverage under ASPE
:

  1. Begins with your travel to the United States.
  2. Is valid through your grant end date and during your final trip home via the most direct route upon completion of your approved Fulbright Program.
  3. Is suspended while you are outside of the United States either for academic or personal reasons. Therefore, if you are traveling outside the United States, you may want to purchase traveler's insurance through your travel agent. You may also want to explore alternate coverage that might be available through your university campus.
  4. Meets J-1 visa requirements for minimum insurance coverage. Your university’s requirements for minimum insurance coverage may differ, and you may be required to purchase additional coverage. Please check your university’s requirements.

Access to Health Care

Your health benefits plan includes a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). A PPO is a network of physicians, hospitals, and clinics that have entered into an agreement with the United States Department of State to accept discounted fees for services they provide to United States Department of State participants. The United States Department of State has contracted with CCN, one of the largest PPO networks in the U.S, to provide medical care, and has arrangements with the MMP laboratory, Durable Medical Equipment, radiology network, and the Up and Up facility network.

Using a PPO provider saves you money because:

  1. The United States Department of State pays 100% of your charges (or up to the policy limit); and
  2. In most cases, if a provider is participating in the network, your payment will not be required at the time of service (except for the co-pay), as the network bills directly to the insurance administrator.

If you do not use a PPO provider in the network, you will be responsible for charges over the usual and customary amount if charged by the provider. That means you will be responsible for payment at the time of service and any balance billings.

How do I locate a provider or facility in the network?

You can search the primary network directly from our website at http://www.usdos.sevencorners.com. Simply click on the section titled Network. There is also a network access telephone number on the back of your ID card (1-800-461-0430) that you can call directly to find a network provider in your area.
