GRANT EXTENSION

If you are no longer eligible for a renewal of Fulbright funding, you may still be eligible for the Fulbright benefits of J-1 visa sponsorship and health benefit coverage. This section provides information on determining your eligibility for a Fulbright Extension, together with Extension instructions.

All grantees requesting an extension of Fulbright benefits (J-1 visa sponsorship and health insurance) and permission to stay in the United States must read the Instructions for Renewal of Fulbright Sponsorship and fill out the Application for Renewal of Fulbright Sponsorship. The completed application and support documents must be submitted to your IIE Regional Contact.

If, however, you plan to complete your academic program in the United States and return to your home country after you complete your U.S. program, please complete the Departure Final Report.

Extension of your Fulbright sponsorship and related benefits is not automatic. In order to receive an extension you must justify your request in terms of progress toward the objective for which you were awarded your Fulbright grant. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete information about your academic program.

The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has set limits on a Fulbright sponsorship at a maximum of three years for a Master's candidate and five years for a Ph.D. candidate, including time spent in academic training. Individual Fulbright Commissions and Foundations abroad have established maximum time limitations for their grantees. These range from 10 months to a maximum of five years. Request for Extension Application

Before you submit this request for extension, please make sure you have obtained the following, which must accompany the request:

1. Academic Advisor's and Foreign Student Advisor’s signatures on your completed Application for Renewal of Fulbright Sponsorship
2. Official university transcript. If the transcript is not enclosed, indicate the date on which the transcript
   was requested from the Registrar’s Office on campus
3. Documentation of awards renewed or secured from your university (if applicable)
4. Official proof of personal funds (if applicable)
5. J-2 Dependent Data Sheet and financial support documents (if applicable)
6. Home employer letter (if applicable).
